Increasing the temperature of atoms increases their speed.
The BC curriculum for science 8 has a big idea that
“The behaviour of matter can be explained by the kinetic molecular theory and atomic theory”.
So in the grade 8 classroom sets where we introduce kinetic molecular theory where solids the atoms vibrating, in liquids they have a little bit more motion and gas are more dispersed.
In this demo we are going to take hot water, and cold water and add a drop of dye to each at the same time- we will see that there is a difference in mixing. The hot water will mix faster, as the molecules have more heat energy.
Tips
- make sure the water is not boiling, because it needs to be still in order to really compare them.
- choose dark color of dye – either red, blue, green so that the mixing is more obvious.
